Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

If you have heart problems or are recovering from surgery, you can complete an individualized exercise program created by Adventist Heart & Vascular Institute experts at one of several convenient locations.

Maintenance exercise programs are available to any patient regardless of where you've received treatment.

You’ll work in collaboration with a team of medical specialists, including board-certified cardiologists, cardiac nurses, exercise physiologists and dieticians who are all highly trained in the development of exercise programs and certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Getting Started at the Hospital

You may begin your rehabilitation program while recovering from a heart attack, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, or angioplasty.  Based in the hospital under the care of your physician, cardiac nurses and exercise physiologists, this kind of rehabilitation focuses on progressive exercise and walking with heart rate, blood pressure and heart monitoring. Also included would be identifying personal risk factors and providing education on lifestyle changes.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation programs at both Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital are certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This three-year certification represents the highest quality in patient care.

Continuing with Outpatient Services

After you are discharged from the hospital, your physician may prescribe a regular exercise program to continue your recovery.  Exercise sessions are scheduled for one hour, three times a week. The program takes about 12 weeks to complete, depending on your progress. This service is available at several convenient locations and is covered by most insurance programs.

Maintaining Your Exercise Program

Adventist Heart & Vascular Institute offers a special cardiovascular maintenance program designed for graduates of the Outpatient program who are independent but still want some supervision during exercise. Consent from your physician is required.  Maintenance programs are typically not covered by most insurance plans.
