Incontinence and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Program

Many women are surprised to find that urinary incontinence is not uncommon.  It affects women of all ages and lifestyles, from new mothers to grandmothers to athletes.

There is no need to feel that you just have to “live with it”.  With the appropriate medical assistance, there is a very good chance that your situation can be either improved or cured.

Weakness of the pelvic floor muscles can be due to pregnancy, childbirth, surgery or the normal aging urine leakage.  With stress incontinence, urine can leak with coughing, sneezing or lifting.  With urge incontinence, the brain signals the bladder to empty involuntarily.

Once infection or other medical conditions are ruled out, these problems may be effectively treated with physical therapy.

The Incontinence and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Program at Paulson Rehab Network is a physician-referred program.  Our specialists are women too, and are sensitive to the issues surrounding these problems.  Physical therapy treatment is performed in a private treatment room.  Biofeedback is used to assist the patient in locating and strengthening the pelvic floor muscles.

Treatment includes one session weekly and performance of a Home Program regularly.

Education is provided for lifestyle changes which also assists with the recovery process.

Therapy for Pregnant Women

A woman’s body undergoes incredible changes throughout pregnancy, many of which add additional stress on the musculoskeletal system.  Some of the aches and pains you have during and after your pregnancy may be helped with physical therapy.

The Paulson Rehab Network offers several unique services geared toward the education and treatment of the pregnant woman during the child-bearing year.

Individual Treatment
Comprehensive one-on-one evaluation and treatment by physical therapists who specialize in the unique problems of an obstetric patient with musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction are available.  All services require a physician’s prescription.

Neck/Back Ache
Massage, hot/cold treatments, postural training, instruction in proper body mechanics and positioning for relaxation during pregnancy and post partum.  Recommendations/trials of maternity support belts are available if necessary for the patient’s specific problem.

Aching Muscles, Joints or Aggravation of Previous Orthopedic Problems
Individualized prenatal/postnatal home exercise programs are offered to strengthen and stretch involved muscles.  Recommendations will include appropriate post-Cesarean home exercises to promote circulation and healing of abdominals and the strengthening of the pelvic floor.

Hand and Wrist Pain
Individualized therapy and splinting by occupational therapists are available to address hand problems such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
